Athens, Georgia meant one thing to me when I was an undergraduate—concerts. Yes there’s a giant state university and probably plenty of history, but the 40 Watt Club and the The Globe were the only parts that mattered to me. Not for the history of those places, but for what they provided in that present—rock, food, and beer.

Revisiting Athens 25 years later brought me to a different past than I expected.

The homes of Athens, the atmosphere of Athens are what I think of when I remember being a kid living in the deep South. Objects and settings appear idealized, but it’s the quirks that make them sublime. Until this trip, it was only white columns and manicured yards in my memory. That additional wildness, however, is what makes the homes, streets, blocks, and neighborhoods exciting.

Most homes have a name. The name is not only for identifying, but also personifying. Their quirks are their personality and spirit. Places project a self.

Being willing to make things and take actions not following convention may be what I inherited from the South by growing up there. In the end, why shouldn’t a tree legally have self and property?
