— I was struck by the history of this place and what it meant to Birmingham.
— And by its size, weight, geometry and grace.

Being at Sloss Furnaces reminded me of walking through Mass MoCA in North Adams, MA. The museum, a complex of 19th century mill buildings now dedicated to art, claims the site traces “the arc of industrialization and post-industrialization of New England, and indeed the world.”
Similarly, Sloss is industrial and aesthetic … yet humble in its ordinary beauty.

Sloss Furnaces, once the largest manufacturer of pig iron in the world, operated between 1882 and 1971. Today they sell very small iron peanuts.
